The Alloy Block’s 505 State Street Approaches Completion in Downtown Brooklyn

At number 19 on our year-end countdown of the tallest buildings under construction in New York is 505 State Street, a 482-foot-tall residential tower in The Alloy Block complex in Downtown Brooklyn. Designed and developed by Alloy Development, the 44-story structure will yield 441 rental units, with 45 reserved for affordable housing, and will be fully powered by electricity. The five-building Alloy Block master plan will comprise a total of 850 units with 200 permanently affordable apartments, 100,000 square feet of Class A office space, 50,000 square feet of retail space, 500 bicycle parking spaces, two Passive House public schools designed by Architecture Research Office, and space for a local cultural institution. Urban Atelier Group is the general contractor for 505 State Street, which was formerly addressed as 100 Flatbush Avenue and is bound by Flatbush Avenue to the northeast, Third Avenue to the northwest, and State Street to the southwest.

58 West 39th Street Resumes Construction in Midtown, Manhattan 

The 20th-tallest building on our year-end construction countdown is 58 West 39th Street, a 475-foot-tall hotel tower in Midtown, Manhattan. Designed by Marin Architects and developed by Wei Hong Hu of H Hotel LLC, the 42-story structure will yield 177 guest rooms and amenities including a restaurant and an outdoor bar. City Cross Construction Corp. is the general contractor for the property, which is located on a narrow plot between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, one block below Bryant Park.

Columbia University’s 600 West 125th Street Nears Completion in Manhattanville, Manhattan

Construction is nearing the finish line on 600 West 125th Street, a 34-story tower on Columbia University‘s Manhattanville campus. Designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop and CetraRuddy Architecture and developed by the Trustees of Columbia University, the 403-foot-tall structure will span roughly 182,000 square feet and yield 142 residences for graduate students and faculty, as well as 5,000 square feet of retail space. LERA is the structural engineer, Thornton Tomasetti is the façade consultant, and Pavarini McGovern is the general contractor for the property, which is located at the corner of Broadway and West 125th Street, adjacent to the elevated 125th Street station serviced by the 1 train.

At number 21 on our annual year-end construction countdown is the Rolex headquarters, a 469-foot-tall commercial building at 665 Fifth Avenue in Midtown, Manhattan. Designed by David Chipperfield Architects with Adamson Associates as the architect of record and developed by the Rolex Realty Company, the 28-story structure will yield 199,000 square feet of office and retail space for the world-famous watchmaker. Pavarini McGovern is the general contractor for the property, which is located at the corner of Fifth Avenue and East 53rd Street.

One Times Square Tops Out in Times Square, Manhattan

Officials and crews recently celebrated the topping out of One Times Square, a 26-story commercial tower at 1475 Broadway in Times Square. Designed by S9 Architecture with SLCE as the architect of record and developed by Jamestown, the $500 million project involves the full gut renovation and exterior re-cladding of the 119-year-old, 395-foot-tall structure, along with the addition of new LED displays and public viewing decks with platforms that will overlook the famous crossroads. R&R Scaffolding Companies will supply the BMU and Turner Construction Company is the general contractor for the property, which is located on a trapezoidal plot bound by West 43rd Street to the north, West 42nd Street to the south, Broadway to the east, and Seventh Avenue to the west.
