It’s been over a year since developer Joseph Brunner filed plans for an 11-story rental building with a grocery store at 1134 Fulton Street in Bedford–Stuyvesant. Tectonic swung by the site earlier this week, and the Key Food, Popeyes, and handful of small stores at the corner of Fulton and Franklin avenues have been mostly demolished.
A huge parking lot in the middle of Bed-Stuy is about to become housing. New building applications have been filed to put up a seven-story residential development at 539 Gates Avenue, between Throop Avenue and Marcus Garvey Boulevard.
New York City’s development booms result in buildings of all shapes and types. And while each round of additions brings lots of positive changes to the city’s skyline, the city’s denizens must, unfortunately, accept the bad with the good. While new projects in surrounding blocks will eventually block much of the building from most perspectives, the misproportioned parapets of 5 Beekman are, in the intermediary, an affront to New Yorkers and the skyline.
The owners of Textile Arts Center in Gowanus are building more light industrial space next door at 497 Carroll Street, between Third and Fourth avenues.
Another day, another new building in Crown Heights. Today’s crop of filings brought plans for a five-story, 16-unit development at 701 Prospect Place, between Bedford and Rogers Avenues.
