A year ago, YIMBY reported on permits for a mixed-use development at the northern edge of Jamaica, on a bustling swath of Hillside Avenue upzoned by the city in 2007. Despite the rezoning, the upzoned piece of downtown Jamaica didn’t see much market-rate development until recently. But construction is beginning to pick up again in the eastern Queens neighborhood, and we have renderings for that sizable project at 148-46 Hillside Avenue in Jamaica.
The attractive five-story factory at 326 Junius Street in Brownsville has been a boxing gym, a community center, and a church. And now, alteration applications have been filed to convert the 1920s building at the corner of Blake Avenue into a 114-key hotel.
Most streets in the Lower East Side are crammed with 15-foot-wide tenement buildings dating as far back as the 1880s, but the one-block stretch of Attorney Street between Delancey and Rivington Streets was once more industrial, lined on the west side with an old brick factory converted to apartments, a 15-year-old residential building, and a series of crumbling brick garages. Now developer Morris Platt is going to fill a hole where one of those garages was demolished, at 91 Attorney Street, with an eight-story apartment building.
If you don’t live downtown, you might be forgiven for not knowing that the Howard Hughes Corporation is trying to remake the South Street Seaport. One of the key components of that is the new Pier 17, which is already in the works. Though the plan hit a bump in the road at Tuesday’s session of the Landmarks Preservation Commission, they aren’t dead in the water.
A new dawn is coming for a lower Manhattan landmark. With Chase gone, the Landmarks Preservation Commission approved a proposal for an adaptive reuse of the plaza in front of the building formerly known as One Chase Manhattan Plaza (now 28 Liberty Street since Fosun International Ltd. bought). There will be ground floor retail and major changes to the plaza that should bring a lot of it back to its former glory.
