Earlier this week, the six finalists of the “Reimagine a New York City Icon” competition were announced. The competition, sponsored by Metals in Construction magazine and the Ornamental Metal Institute of New York, isn’t part of any actual process in the works to modify the Midtown office tower, but are fascinating ideas of what could be. Perhaps these ideas will be put into use at other buildings.
As the New York City Housing Authority struggles to develop its underutilized properties across the five boroughs, YIMBY revisited Prospect Plaza in Ocean Hill, Brooklyn, where the city tore down an entire public housing project two years ago. Now, construction is wrapping up on the second phase of affordable rental buildings that replaced the 12- and 15-story towers.
It’s been a busy week for new development in western Flushing. Yesterday, YIMBY spotted plans for a hotel-residential-retail project in the part of the neighborhood that’s about to be rezoned, and today a different local builder filed plans for an eight-story, mixed-use building at 131-09 Fowler Avenue, close to Flushing Meadows Park and the Van Wyck Expressway.
Another vacant, city-owned lot in the South Bronx is about to sprout affordable housing. The city’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development filed plans to build a 12-story rental building at 443 East 162nd Street in Melrose, where activists have spent decades fighting for city services and housing that locals could afford.
Small market-rate developers in the Bronx have slowed down their plans for new buildings since the 421-a tax abatement program expired last month. But a few risk takers are still planning projects in the borough’s more established neighborhoods, like Bedford Park. Last week, developer Arben Mitaj filed plans for an eight-story market-rate building at 3053 Villa Avenue, between Bedford Park Boulevard and East 204th Street in Bedford Park.
