Facade Work Underway at Recently Topped-Out Harrison at 27-21 44th Drive, Long Island City

Façade work is in full swing at 27-21 44th Drive in Long Island City. The 27-story apartment building known as The Edison reached its final height in early June, when the national flag was hoisted atop its concrete bulkhead. At that point, the roughly 300-foot-tall structure became the tenth-tallest within the Court Square district, though taller neighbors rising nearby are already surpassing it. However, the building would remain highly visible thanks to its position at the epicenter of the resurgent neighborhood.

Two years ago, YIMBY brought you the first look at the 12-story office and medical center for New York City Hotel and Motel Trades Council’s Employee Benefit Funds at 620 Fulton Street in Downtown Brooklyn. Now, workers are installing a curved, undulating facade on the building, and Tectonic has photos of the progress.

YIMBY has brought you several composite renderings of what the skyline will look like over the next few years. Now we have a fresh image of what the city’s future holds, thanks to YIMBY Forums user Thomas Koloski, which illustrates the major changes soon coming to Jersey City, Manhattan, and Brooklyn. Most of the projects added to the image are either already under construction or imminently rising, and their collective impact on the cityscape will push the New York City skyline to new, Coruscantian heights.

Though the weather is cooling down, it isn’t putting a damper on new development in Long Island City. On Wednesday, a new 10-story, 102,292-square-foot mixed-use building topped out at 37-14 36th Street, located between Northern Boulevard and 37th Avenue in the Dutch Kills section of the neighborhood.

Thorobird Companies is already planning two 12-story affordable rental buildings in Mount Hope, in the central Bronx. They also filed building applications for a third, 12-story project at 2195 Morris Avenue in Fordham Heights, half a dozen blocks to the north and west of the Mount Hope developments.

Synagogue and Hotel Planned for 685 Flushing Avenue in Broadway Triangle

A year ago, a local developer filed plans to convert and expand a small commercial building on Flushing Avenue in Williamsburg’s Broadway Triangle into a nine-story yeshiva with apartments. Now, the project at 685 Flushing Avenue has resurfaced as a new, 12-story building with a synagogue and a hotel.

Peter Poon Architects have designed nearly two dozen hotels across the city, and now another one of their glassy structures is coming to the area near Penn Station. Mayflower Business Group has filed new building applications for a 24-story hotel at 319 West 35th Street, between Eighth and Ninth avenues.

It’s been a busy few days in the Bronx for the Department of Buildings, and the surge in new building applications across the borough probably has something to do with Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s new plan to resurrect the 421-a tax break. A non-profit working to end homelessness has filed plans for a 13-story supportive housing project at 2865 Creston Avenue, in the northwestern Bronx neighborhood of Bedford Park.
