The years-long initiative to renovate and repurpose the defunct Bayview Correctional Facility in Chelsea may never be revived following an abrupt cancellation by the NoVo Foundation and Goren Group in 2019. Referred to as the Women’s Building, the structure at 550 West 20th Street would have repurposed and expanded the former all-female prison, renderings of which have been released by Spacesmith and Davis Brody Bond.
The site of the Hudson Arts Building at 220 Eleventh Avenue is gearing up for excavation in West Chelsea. Designed by Studios Architecture and developed by The Moinian Group, the glass-clad commercial office project will span a full block between West 25th Street and West 26th Street and feature ceiling heights exceeding 17 feet. JLL is the exclusive leasing agent for the property.
Renaissance New York Chelsea Hotel is now officially open and arrives as the brand’s premiere hotel in the neighborhood. At 430 feet tall, it is also one of the tallest structures ever constructed in Chelsea. The property is located at 112 West 25th Street and replaced the long-running Antiques Garage indoor flea market, considered one of the go-to destinations for antique shoppers. The hotel’s interiors, courtesy of architects Stonehill Taylor, pay homage to the iconic market and Chelsea’s eclectic history.
Construction kicked off this week on the Hudson Arts Building, a new office development at 220 Eleventh Avenue in West Chelsea, Manhattan. Designed by Studios Architecture and developed by The Moinian Group, the project will occupy an entire city block between 25th and 26th Streets. According to JLL, the exclusive leasing agent for the property, the Hudson Arts Building is expected to welcome tenants by 2022, and the official groundbreaking was held yesterday.
Construction has topped out on Maverick, a two-building, 210-foot-tall residential project at 215 West 28th Street in Chelsea. Located between Seventh Avenue and Eighth Avenue, the 20-story development is designed by DXA Architects and being developed by HAP Investments, and consists of abutting buildings spanning over 300,000 square feet. The structurally identical reinforced concrete superstructures are addressed as 215-219 West 28th Street and 221-229 West 28th Street.
