95-Story Supertall Planned for Jersey City Waterfront at 55 Hudson Street

In New York City, the current real estate boom has left the largest marks on the Midtown Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn skylines, but the rise of Jersey City over the past few years has been equally if not more impressive. And while the latest additions across the Hudson have been predominantly residential, YIMBY has word that a 95-story tower is now in the works at 55 Hudson Street, which could make it the tallest building in both Jersey City, and all of New Jersey.

Nordstrom Tower's latest look, sans spire

Nordstrom Tower Has Lost Its Spire, Will Stand 1,550 Feet Tall

Last month, a rep for Extell told the NY Post that all images of Nordstrom Tower released so far are inaccurate, which is especially confusing considering some of the images came from documents produced in-house at the firm. But the PR doublespeak is technically correct, and YIMBY can now confirm that there has indeed been an additional tweak to the plans, and the country’s future tallest building (by roof height) has been scalped of its spire.

The old Mercedes dealership at 520 West 41st Street and Eleventh Avenue is meeting a quick demise, paving the way for Silverstein Properties to begin preparation work for their future mixed-use development. While the project must still pass through ULURP, YIMBY revealed preliminary renderings last June, showing a 1,400-unit tower rising above a significant retail podium. Now we have a few overhead shots of demolition progress taken from the nearly-completed Skye, just a few hundred feet to the northwest.

What Could Have Been: Norman Foster & Rogers Stirk Harbour’s Submissions for Nordstrom Tower, 217 West 57th Street

With formwork about to rise above ground level at Nordstrom Tower, the Smith + Gill-designed supertall’s plans seem to be finalized, pending possible adjustments at the very top. But other renderings for Extell’s site were created by several firms during the RFP process, and we now have images of proposals by Foster + Partners and Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners. While they will remain unbuilt, both versions of the building offer fantastical takes on the future of Midtown in their own right.
