On Monday, city officials celebrated the opening of the Shirley Chisholm Recreation Center, a $141 million community facility at 3105 Farragut Place in the Little Haiti section of East Flatbush, Brooklyn. Developed by the NYC Department of Design and Construction using the design-build method, the 74,000-square-foot center is expected to serve more than 41,000 residents living within a 15-minute walk or transit ride.
Features include a six-lane competition pool with accessibility aids, a three-lane walking track, and a full-sized gymnasium for basketball, volleyball, and pickleball. Additional fitness spaces support cardio, weightlifting, and spin workouts. Dedicated areas also cater to youth programming, such as a supervised teen center, afterschool spaces, a teaching kitchen, and the Dr. Roy A. Hastick Sr. Media Lab for audiovisual production.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani attended the ribbon cutting ceremony alongside NYC Parks Commissioner Tricia Shimamura and local elected officials.
Opening to the public on February 10, the Shirley Chisholm Recreation Center is welcoming New Yorkers with one free day of access during its first week, offering tours, demonstrations, and registration support. Memberships are free for individuals 24 and under, and discounted rates are available for other age groups.
The closest subways from the center are the 2 and 5 trains at the Newkirk Ave–Little Haiti station to the northwest.
