Skanska has completed an $8 million renovation of the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) Sports Medicine Institute West Side at 610 West 58th Street in Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan. The project expanded and modernized the hospital’s outpatient care facility, which serves more than 95,000 patients annually. Work was performed in collaboration with Batska Consulting Group and required coordination with the building’s landlord, tenants, and HSS operations due to the facility’s location within an occupied residential structure. The property is located between Eleventh and Twelfth Avenues.
Renovation work addressed approximately 12,000 square feet of the facility, primarily focused around modifying the fourth floor to become an outpatient clinic. Key additions include 15 new exam rooms, medical offices, storage space, and upgraded MEP systems. Enhancements also featured a new X-ray room, an ultrasound-guided injection room, and an Article 28-compliant renovation of the cellar level.
To ensure the facility met high-performance healthcare standards, the construction team used point cloud scans to generate detailed heat maps and integrated these with BIM models for quality control. The approach allowed for precise coordination of ceiling and utility installations, with floor leveling strategies maintaining compliance to within two millimeters of variance.
The closest subways from the Sports Medicine Institute West Side are the 1, A, B, C, and D trains at the 59th Street–Columbus Circle station.
