Work is wrapping up on 655 Union Street, a 13-story residential building in Gowanus, Brooklyn. Designed by L+Z Architecture and developed by Avery Hall and Gindi Capital, the 200,000-square-foot structure will yield 193 rental units in one- to two-bedroom layouts, as well as 14,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space. Fifty of the units will be designated for affordable housing. The half-acre property is alternately addressed as 204 4th Avenue and bound by Sackett Street to the north and Raul Vasquez Jr. Place to the south.

The remaining charcoal-hued façade panels were installed on the upper levels since our last update in August, when the envelope was approaching the first setback. Recent photos show the completed look of the exterior, which features several stepped tiers on the upper levels with a more sparsely windowed fenestration than the main bulk below. The main rendering above shows these setbacks and the upper parapet topped with lush greenery. The ground floor is framed by contrasting bare concrete surrounding floor-to-ceiling glass for the retail frontage. Some minor finishing touches are currently wrapping up on the retail space and surrounding sidewalks.

  1. In their rendering they show planted trees on the 4th Avenue side of the building. Can there be trees on 4th Avenue I thought the subway was down there?

  2. Reality matches Rendering, congratulations!

  3. Great looking building. This turned out really nice. Due credit to the developer who has an excellent track record for high quality projects.

Not mentioned in this article is the fact that the MTA negotiated an easement at the beginning of this project as part of the ZFA program in order to locate an elevator in the base of this building for the Union St subway station. Unfortunately the MTA has not funded the actual installation, so in the meantime there is just a space on the Sackett St side where it will go.

This is a very good design. I’m hopeful the concrete base won’t begin to detract.

It’s part of the development with dark tones of the street, and the beautiful building which is unlikely to be related to the crossing: Thanks to Michael Young.

  6. These metal clad buildings always look like they’re covered in black vinyl siding. Especially the one looking over Madison Square, although that one has terrific massing while this is just a boring box. Just looks cheap.

I imagine the dark metal would get rather hot in the sun—hope they have good expansion joints.

What a beautiful building. I would love to live in it.

  9. There are rumors that Trader Joe’s is opening here.

  10. 193 Apartments
    50 are “affordable”
    143 are unaffordable.

  11. What’s 2 Bedrooms price? If it’s available I’m interested.
