New York City Mayor Eric Adams and officials from the Department of Design and Construction and the Department of Parks and Recreation recently celebrated the groundbreaking of the Mary Cali Dalton Recreation Center in Tompkinsville, Staten Island. Designed by Ikon.5 Architects, the $92 million project is Staten Island’s first recreation center in over 14 years and is a cornerstone of Mayor Adams’ Staten Island North Shore Action Plan, which aims to create 20 acres of public space, new jobs, and foster housing development in the area.

The Mary Cali Dalton Recreation Center will span 45,000 square feet and serve as a community hub with sports courts and fitness rooms. This initiative represents a significant investment in the borough, aiming to deliver comprehensive improvements across parks, jobs, housing, and overall quality of life.

Named after the late Mary Cali Dalton who worked as the NYC Parks chief of recreation for Staten Island, the center will be located adjacent to Lyons Pool and the waterfront in Tompkinsville and will utilize the Design-Build process, ensuring completion by the end of 2025.

“Today we celebrate a tremendous milestone for Staten Island and New York as a whole,” said Meera Joshi, deputy mayor for operations. “One of the first NYC Parks projects using design build, bringing the construction team into the design process. The Mary Cali Dalton Recreation Center will be open for business two and a half years earlier than it would otherwise, an example of what’s possible with alternative delivery. With Albany’s help, we can expand the use of these tools to deliver New Yorkers more needed civic projects like Mary Cali Dalton Recreation Center quicker and cheaper, and with greater M/WBE participation. This is a win.”

It is probably not a development, that leaders do not want to make for the community: Thanks.
