Mayor Adams Signs Legislation To Reform Sidewalk Scaffolding Across All Five Boroughs

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has signed into law a legislative package aimed at reforming the use and design of sidewalk sheds throughout the city. Known as Intros. 393-A, 394-A, 391-A, 660-A, and 661-A, the measures seek to address long-standing issues with sidewalk scaffolding, including excessive permit durations, poor lighting, and design uniformity. These bills give the Department of Buildings (DOB) expanded authority to enforce repairs, enhance public safety, and encourage removal of sheds once work is completed, forming a critical part of the city’s broader “Get Sheds Down” initiative launched in July 2023.

Bronx River Parkway Bridge Replacement Project Reaches Completion

Governor Kathy Hochul recently announced the completion of the Bronx River Parkway Bridge Replacement Project, a $66.4 million infrastructure initiative in the Wakefield and Woodlawn neighborhoods of The Bronx. The project replaced a 75-year-old bridge that carried the parkway over the Metro-North Railroad with a new multi-girder steel structure. Led by the New York State Department of Transportation, the project also included rehabilitative work on an adjacent bridge spanning the Bronx River, enhancements to a section of the Bronx River Greenway, and traffic flow improvements throughout the corridor.

NYCEDC Commits $18M To Infrastructure Upgrades At Brooklyn Marine Terminal In Red Hook, Brooklyn

The New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) has signed three infrastructure contracts totaling $18 million to upgrade operations at the Brooklyn Marine Terminal in Red Hook, Brooklyn. The investment marks the initial phase of a broader redevelopment plan for the 122-acre terminal site. The contracts include demolition of four decommissioned cranes, acquisition of a new all-electric ship-to-shore crane, and critical pier repairs at Red Hook Container Terminal’s Pier 10.

City Planning Commission Approves Atlantic Avenue Mixed-Use Rezoning Plan In Brooklyn

The New York City Planning Commission has approved the Atlantic Avenue Mixed-Use Plan, a rezoning proposal in Central Brooklyn aimed at creating 4,600 new homes and 2,800 permanent jobs. The plan spans a 21-block stretch along Atlantic Avenue, including parts of Crown Heights and Bedford-Stuyvesant. Spearheaded by Mayor Eric Adams and the Department of City Planning (DCP), the community-led initiative includes zoning changes to enable mixed-use development and significant investments in public infrastructure and safety upgrades.

Public Review Begins For Jamaica Neighborhood Plan In Jamaica, Queens

The New York City Department of City Planning (DCP), in partnership with Mayor Eric Adams’ administration, has launched the public review process for the Jamaica Neighborhood Plan in Jamaica, Queens. Covering 230 blocks, the proposal aims to deliver over 12,000 new homes, including 4,000 permanently affordable units. The initiative is the result of more than two years of public engagement and seeks to address housing needs, modernize zoning, and support economic development in the neighborhood.

Construction Progresses on South Brooklyn Marine Terminal in Sunset Park, Brooklyn

Construction is progressing on the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal, a 73-acre project to support the development of the Empire Wind 1 offshore wind farm. Developed by the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) and Sustainable South Brooklyn Marine Terminal (SSBMT), a joint venture of Red Hook Terminals and Industry City, the complex will serve as a staging and assembly site for the wind farm’s turbine components and will feature a substation to connect the wind power to the city’s grid. The $861 million project is located on the border of Sunset Park and Greenwood Heights between 29th and 39th Streets on the western side of 2nd Avenue.

New York City Announces $390 Million ‘City of Yes’ Infrastructure Investment In Bushwick, Brooklyn

New York City is set to invest $390 million toward infrastructure upgrades in Bushwick, Brooklyn, to address chronic flooding and improve water service. Announced as part of Mayor Eric Adams’ City of Yes for Housing Opportunity initiative, the project will replace three miles of aging sewer pipes and nearly a mile of water mains, modernizing essential infrastructure in the area. Spearheaded by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the Department of Transportation (DOT), work will significantly expand sewer capacity while replacing all lead service lines at no cost to property owners.

Governor Hochul Unveils Budget For Fiscal Year 2026

Governor Kathy Hochul has unveiled her fiscal year 2026 Executive Budget, which among state-wide initiatives, includes a number of measures to tackle New York City’s housing crisis and promote real estate development in the city. Central to the budget is the allocation of $1 billion over five years to Mayor Adams’ “City of Yes” initiative, which will fund housing construction and places an emphasis on zoning reforms to boost density. Another $760.5 million in discretionary funding has been allocated for certified Pro-Housing Communities, including $100 million for infrastructure upgrades to support new developments.

New Preliminary Renderings Revealed for Manhattan Detention Center at 124-125 White Street in Chinatown, Manhattan

A new video by construction company Tutor Perini offers the first glimpses of the Manhattan Detention Center, a proposed 16-story jail at 124-125 White Street in Chinatown, Manhattan. Led by design-build organization Gramercy Group Inc., the $3.8 billion project will stand 295 feet tall on the site of the now-demolished Manhattan Detention Complex (MDC) infamously known as “The Tombs,” and will span 1.25 million square feet. The property is bound by Walker Street to the north, the Manhattan Criminal Court Building to the south, Baxter Street to the east, and Centre Street to the west.

Phase One of Willets Point Development Rises in Willets Point, Queens

Construction has risen past the halfway mark on the first phase of the Willets Point redevelopment, a two-building residential project in Willets Point, Queens. Designed by S9Architecture and developed by the New York City Economic Development Corporation, the 12-story structures will rise from shared one-story podium and will yield 880 affordable units in one building and 220 affordable senior units in the other. The project is located on an approximately six-acre plot bound by Willets Point Boulevard to the northwest, Roosevelt Avenue to the south, and Flushing Creek to the east.
