New York YIMBY 2025 Report Showcases More Than 57,000 Proposed Residential and Hotel Units

Just as New Yorkers are getting used to brand new additions to the city’s celebrated skyline like the 1,388-foot-tall colossus of the JPMorgan Chase Tower at 270 Park Avenue, numerous new additions are already on the drawing boards throughout the five boroughs. The numbers are in for new building permits filed for with the Department of Buildings in 2025, with a total of 1,972 new permits combining to 67.5 million square feet. These developments, which range from more skyline-altering supertalls to humble garages on the city outskirts, will provide a combined total of 57,352 residential and hotel units (predominantly residential), millions of square feet of commercial space, and 248 high-rise buildings with ten or more stories. As the summer draws to a close, New York YIMBY takes a look back at the state of the city’s construction and real estate industry over the course of the year’s first half. Our comprehensive 2025 New York City Mid-Year Construction Report tallied all new building permit submissions made to the city’s Department of Buildings over the course of the year’s first and second quarters, from January through June. During this time span, the city’s developers and architects filed a total of 945 new building permits, which combine to a proposed total of 27 million square feet and will offer 23,446 new residential and hotel units. Landmark ‘City of Yes’ Housing Creation Plan Approved with $5 Billion Push

A City Council subcommittee on Thursday approved Mayor Eric Adams’ plan to build 80,000 new homes over the next 15 years, lowering the cost of rent for New Yorkers amid one of the worst housing crises in city history. Dubbed “City of Yes for Housing Opportunity,” the rezoning proposal aims to spur the creation of affordable housing in all five boroughs, along with upgrades to critical infrastructure. As temperatures begin to drop, New York City’s construction market shows no signs of cooling down. New York YIMBY’s construction report for the third quarter of 2024, based on permit filings submitted to the Department of Buildings during the three-month period from July through September, shows strong filing activity that indicates momentum is continuing from the preceding quarterly tallies.
