The New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) and Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) have released a Request for Proposals for a mixed-use redevelopment at 1743 86th Street in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. The project will replace the existing New Utrecht Library with a new public library and more than 200 units of 100 percent affordable housing on the library site and an adjacent city-owned parking lot. The property is located between 18th Avenue and Bay 16th Street.

The existing New Utrecht Library was built in 1956 and has served the neighborhood for 70 years. According to HPD and BPL, the branch has significant deferred maintenance needs, and the redevelopment will allow for a new facility designed with updated infrastructure, flexible spaces, and programming informed by local community priorities.

The RFP follows a community engagement process that included an in-person workshop attended by more than 100 residents, neighborhood outreach in multiple languages, meetings with Community Board members and local stakeholders, and more than 320 questionnaire responses. Priorities identified in the process included affordable housing for a range of incomes, homes for seniors and households with children, expanded library programming and collections, and potential community amenities such as green space, recreation, arts, and cultural uses.

1743 86th Street is a short walk from the 18th Avenue subway station, served by the D train.
