Demolition has concluded at 620 Twelfth Avenue, the site of a six-story storage and office facility in Hells Kitchen. Owned by Edison Properties and leased to Verizon Communications for $50 million, the structure will span 269,000 square feet and include a cellar level, which may feature on-site parking for the network operator. Nordest Services served as the demolition contractor for the property, which is alternately addressed as 648 West 48th Street and is bound by West 47th and West 48th Streets and the Hudson River Greenway.

Aerial images taken over the past several months show the abandoned four-story commercial occupant of the 22,150-square-foot plot in the process of being razed behind scaffolding and black netting.

The below Google Street View images detail the former occupant before its demolition. The structure was constructed in the mid-1940s as an elevator and escalator manufacturing space, and was last utilized as a temporary storage area for COVID-19 surgical masks.

The closest subways from the property are the C and E trains at the 50th Street station to the east along Eighth Avenue.

Verizon Communications’ lease is expected to run through at least March 2044. A construction timeline and renderings of the new facility have yet to be released.

  1. Let me get this straight…
a 4-story commercial building that had been used for STORAGE during COVID, has been demolished to build
    a 6-story commercial building for
    STORAGE?! 🤔🤪

You would think the former could have been had 2 additional floors added, remained it’s early 40s brick facade and looked like it’s always been there? 🤔

Old goes and new comes, can you see that there is a change coming? Thanks.

  3. The rendering of the new facility is already posted on the green construction fence. It’s a new multi level garage for vehicle storage, with a large Verizon Logo facing 12th Ave.
