Construction on Extell’s 50 West 66th Street May Restart Soon on Manhattan’s Upper West Side

Extell’s 50 West 66th Street slots into YIMBY’s countdown list as the 22nd tallest project underway in New York City. Excavation and foundation work for the 775-foot-tall residential skyscraper progressed quickly in 2019, but activity at the site has recently halted. The reasons for the stoppage are unclear, but YIMBY expects that work will start up again in early 2020. Snohetta is the design team behind the tower, which would become the tallest structure on the Upper West Side.

The photos below show the amount of work that has been completed so far. The exposed steel rebar for the walls and columns of the ground floor, scaffolding, and other materials are neatly piled and stacked until progress resumes. The Central Park Tower, also from Extell, can be seen in the background while looking through the construction fence.

The site is located between West 65th street and West 66th Street and is a short walk to the west side of Central Park. So far the rendering seen in the featured image is still the most up-to-date design. There had been some controversy regarding the height of the building and its multiple tall mechanical voids, but plans still have the structure culminating in a 775-foot-tall roof parapet.

The closest subway is the 1 train, at the intersection of Columbus Avenue and Broadway diagonally across from Lincoln Center. The shops and restaurants at Columbus Circle are a brisk walk to the south and feature a below-grade Whole Foods Market and dining options like Masa, Per Se, Momofuku Noodle Bar, and more. Lincoln Center and Central Park are both a five-minute walk away.

A revised completion date for 50 West 66th Street has yet to be announced.

  1. Do you think the residents of this building will care where the closest subway is located?

  2. Didn’t that mid level break in the facade used to be open to the elements with trees? Looks like they are value engineering it into a standard glass rectangle. Hopefully not.

  3. Any new updates on construction re-start at Extell’s 50 West 66th Street project? There is no current information on website. It’s been several months since YIMBY had indicated construction to re-start soon. No activity seen at the job site for several months.
