As we have reported, the Landmarks Preservation Commission is in the process of dealing with the backlog of 95 items that have been on its calendar since before 2010, some for decades. That process took a big step forward Tuesday, with 30 sites remaining on the calendar as priorities for designation vote by the end of 2016. Five sites were removed from the calendar for lack of merit.
It’s not every day that you see preservationists speak out against designating a new landmark, but that’s what happened on Thursday as the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing about designating Union Square Park a city scenic landmark. The LPC is continuing its process of dealing with its backlog of 95 items that have been on the calendar since before 2010. Thursday was the first day to deal with properties in Manhattan.
The city’s Economic Development Corporation has requested proposals to develop the property at 124 East 14th Street, between 3rd and 4th Avenues in Union Square, according to Crain’s. Currently, a two-story commercial building housing a P.C. Richard & Son appliance store occupies the property. The site, however, boasts the potential for 140,000 square feet of residential development or 93,000 square feet of commercial development rights. The city is aiming to have an office building constructed, but the project could end up being residential or mixed-use. Existing retail leases in the building expire in February of next year, the same time proposals are due.
