A proposal has been submitted to the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) for alterations to 636 Sixth Avenue in the Ladies’ Mile Historic District in Flatiron, Manhattan. Led by Health Center, Inc. with architecture and design services provided by Gensler, the proposal seeks approval for updates to the building’s storefront and entryways. The property is located between West 19th and 20th Streets.

Proposed work includes the removal of existing metal and glass storefronts along both the Sixth Avenue and West 19th Street façades, to be replaced with new black aluminum glazing units featuring custom picture frame mullion caps. New Indiana limestone piers will be installed to match the building’s original material, along with granite bases in Deer Isle and Cambrian finishes. A new marquee will be added above the West 19th Street entrance, and alterations will also include revised entrances for staff, patients, deliveries, and building services.

Additional modifications include realignment of ground-level piers to correspond with the structure’s upper floors, new signage across the building envelope, and the integration of a fluted GFRC panel system to harmonize with the existing limestone elements. The proposed design maintains historic components, such as original limestone headers and decorative cornices, while introducing updated finishes and accessibility improvements.

A lovely building in a truly unique, historic neighborhood.

  2. No one can claim history is being dishonored in this redo… clearly, the street level was grim during the days of the 6th Ave elevated. They seem to pay scrupulous attention to detail, and this building will look better than it ever did in its life. And provide very attractive retail.
