An application has been filed with the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) for 1227 Pacific Street, an individually landmarked Romanesque Revival church in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Designed by George Poole Chappell and completed in 1886, the red-brick structure is owned by the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island, which is seeking a Certificate of Appropriateness to make permanent the early-2025 removal of the Peterson Memorial Window, a monumental stained-glass window of 12 panels designed and fabricated by Tiffany Studios.

LPC approved the window’s removal on a temporary basis in early 2025 under Permit for Minor Work PMW-25-01633, after the vacant building’s deteriorated condition and repeated trespassing and vandalism left it at imminent risk. J&R Lamb Studios crated the panels, which remain in a climate-controlled art-storage facility in Queens. The openings were reglazed with Bendheim’s “EcoGlass Gothic” textured glass, and the window’s 1931 wood tracery was retained in place.

The church’s chancel was completed in 1890, the rectory in 1912, and the parish house in 1921. The building was designated an individual landmark on March 19, 1974, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. After a 2021 conditions assessment identified structural stabilization and envelope repairs in the millions of dollars, the buildings closed in September 2022 over life-safety concerns, and the congregation relocated to the Church of St. Luke and St. Matthew at Clinton and Atlantic Avenues. The church is scheduled for deconsecration this fall, according to the application.
The diocese is marketing the property with Ariel Property Advisors as 1227-1231 Pacific Street, a 30,781-square-foot block-through assemblage of three tax lots with frontage on Pacific Street and Atlantic Avenue. The application includes a residential test-fit study dated February 27, 2026, showing a conversion of the 13,468-square-foot first floor and 13,707-square-foot basement that would retain stained glass and tracery wherever feasible.
