The Bruce Springsteen Center For American Music (BSCAM) has opened at Monmouth University campus in Long Branch, New Jersey. Designed by COOKFOX, the two-story, 32,000-square-foot institution was built to preserve the legacy of Bruce Springsteen and celebrate the diverse history of American music. The $50 million project features a 240-seat theater, interactive experiences, gallery spaces with historic artifacts, research archives, a rehearsal studio, and a reading room. The property is addressed as 382 Cedar Avenue and located at the corner of Cedar and Norwood Avenues.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on June 6 and was attended by Bruce Springsteen and his wife Patti Scialfa, New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill, and Jon Bon Jovi, among others. Live music was performed by David Sancious.

The steel-framed structure is 30 feet tall, 206 feet long, and 74 feet wide, and is enclosed in an assembly of weathered steel rain screen panels, a nod to New Jersey’s industrial heritage. The property features a boardwalk-inspired entrance path, and is surrounded by landscaping featuring native plants and bioswales for stormwater retention designed in a collaboration with LaGuardia Design Group.

The all-electric building was constructed as a LEED v4 BD+C certified structure and is the Monmouth University’s first LEED building. Sustainable design features include a direct outside air system (DOAS), which separates ventilation from primary heating and cooling, as well as a hydronic radiant floor in the galleries.

“The origin of this project, what drew me in, was a bond I felt with one of our generation’s greatest storytellers,” said Rick Cook, founding partner of COOKFOX. “As a team, we were inspired by Bruce Springsteen’s honesty, bravery, and authenticity while designing the visitor experience, the form and proportions of the building, its materiality, the phenomenally high-performing auditorium space, and the relationship of the architecture to the exhibits, archives, and content.”

  1. Wow! What an stunning piece of architecture. Absolutely beautiful. A befitting project for an American icon.

  2. “Built to preserve the legacy of Bruce Springsteen”..um, well ok, it is sort of a beautiful building..

  3. Beautiful structure. Sad what’s happened to Bruce; so bitter and full of anger even towards people that’ve been fans of his music their entire lives. And for what? Politicians that could care less about either one of us.

  4. He is a patriot who is listening to Benjamin Franklin… “A republic, if you can keep it”

  5. AS AN 80 YEAR OLD FAN OF BRUCE’S WORK, I UNDERSTAND ALL OF THE ABOVE REPLIES.
MY OWN JOURNEY HAS HAD MANY ‘EVENTS’- BOTH POSITIVE & … MIXED: AND AS ONE
WISE PERSON (A FORMER POPE) STATED … ‘WHO AM I TO JUDGE?’
HOWEVER, THE BLDG, THE LANDSCAPE, ITS PURPOSE AND FUNCTION … ARE: A 10 ON 10!
BRUCE, MAY YOUR JOY OF SPIRIT, HAVE A VERY ‘LONG’ ENGAGEMENT.
    SINCERELY,
    TOM
