The Hudson River Park Trust has announced the opening of the Pier 26 Science Playground, a 4,000-square-foot recreational space along the Hudson River Greenway in Tribeca, Manhattan. Designed by OLIN, the playground aims to foster marine science learning and connect New Yorkers with the wildlife of the Hudson River. The facility is located at the end of North Moore Street alongside the future Hudson River Estuarium.

The park features play structures in the shape of endangered sturgeon species native to the Hudson River, the Atlantic Sturgeon and Shortnose Sturgeon.

Pier 26 Science Playground was made possible by a private capital campaign led by Hudson River Park Friends, along with grants from local elected officials. Mike Novogratz, former Friends’ board chair, played an important role in fundraising for the playground. Additional financial support and leadership came from Borough President Mark Levine, Council Member Chris Marte, and the entire City Council.

Throughout the design process, the Hudson River Park Trust and its partners actively engaged with the community, actively incorporating feedback from residents and stakeholders. The park features a variety of safety and environmental elements, including a perimeter seat wall, safety surfacing, climbing nets, and native plants and trees.

The playground is the fifth children’s playground in Hudson River Park and complements the adjacent Pier 26. The area is known for its ecological zones and hands-on learning opportunities about river ecology. The Estuarium, a marine science research and public education center, is expected to complete the vision of Hudson River Park.
