Foundation work is continuing at 600 West 125th Street, a 34-story tower on Columbia University‘s Manhattanville campus. Designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop and CetraRuddy Architecture and developed by the Trustees of Columbia University, the 391-foot-tall structure will span 175,000 square feet and yield 142 residences for graduate students and faculty, and 5,000 square feet of retail space. LERA is the structural engineer, Thornton Tomasetti is the façade consultant, and Pavarini McGovern is the general contractor for the property, which is located at the corner of Broadway and West 125th Street, adjacent to the elevated 125th Street 1 train station.

Since our last update in September, the dense network of black rebar and conduit that was exposed on the southern side of the property has been built over with scaffolding that will support the ground-floor slab. At the time of our visit, a tall crane to the west of the plot was in the process of hoisting concrete formwork into place on the northern end, and the base for a tower crane has been assembled along 125th Street.

The land to the northwest is being used as a staging area for deliveries, trailers, and machinery.

This following shot looking north shows the void that will soon be filled by the new tower. 600 West 125th Street will make a significant impact on this section of the uptown skyline, which features few buildings of its scale.

600 West 125th Street is engineered to achieve LEED Gold certification with sustainable and eco-friendly elements such as a high-performance façade, vegetated roof space, storm water collection and retention, optimized equipment efficiency, and an enhanced Clean Construction program. Amenities include a 150-bicycle storage room, storage space, a fitness center, and lounges located on the second and sixth floors with adjoining outdoor terraces. The McDonald’s location that long occupied the plot is reported to be among the tenants of the ground-floor retail space.

The construction board lists 600 West 125th Street’s completion date for 2023, but sometime in 2024 is more likely.

I’m really looking forward to seeing what this ends up looking like.

  2. Glad to hear that McDonald’s is going to return to this location!
Now this brand new tower will smell like french fries! 🤣

    • The community demanded that Columbia put a McDonalds there. That why it is going in. Columbia caved to the community demands rather than putting in a healthy option.

    McDonald’s— UGH!!! Terrible. Keep away.

    • I don’t know, McDonald’s food is mostly crap but there’s a few things that redeem the place. It’s a great place to get a dirt cheap giant soft drink if that’s what quinches your thirst. I think they make a pretty good apple pie and there’s a few breakfast menu items that at least seem good when you’ve got breakfast hunger. When you suspend any concerns about cholesterol splitting a large fry with someone can be an cheap and enjoyable treat. Once or twice a year I have a huge moment of weakness and binge a 20 piece chicken McNugget. It’s usually followed by an emergency bathroom visit and/or an hour or two of mild nausea.

  4. Nice building. This new Columbia campus is really nice, they are spending a lot of time to make the buildings functional and attractive. Such an improvement from what the neighborhood used to be.
