At number 15 on our construction countdown is 3 Sutton Place, an 847-foot-tall residential skyscraper nearing completion at 430 East 58th Street in Midtown East. Designed by Thomas Juul-Hansen and developed by Gamma Real Estate with Stephen B. Jacobs Group as the executive architect, the 62-story tower is located between Sutton Place South and First Avenue and will yield 121 units. The site is a short walk from the Sutton Place Park North esplanade, which overlooks the East River, Roosevelt Island, and the growing Long Island City skyline.

Since our last update in August, the crown has been fully enclosed in its geometric paneling and the construction elevator has been dismantled from the southern elevation, leaving a gap in the glass curtain wall that will soon be filled in.

Metal scaffolding protrudes above the flat roof parapet with hanging platforms helping to put together the finishing touches to the crown. At certain angles and times of the day, the crown appears to take on a gold or bronze hue due to the reflections off the edges of the patterned motif.

With the hoist removed, we can finally appreciate the slenderness of the tower’s eastern and western profiles. Some of the best perspectives of 3 Sutton Place are from Roosevelt Island, the East River, and the tram platform at the foot of the Queensboro Bridge on the Manhattan side.

Close-up shots of the crown reveal the thin light fixtures that will eventually illuminate this part of the structure and highlight the concentric pattern of recessed rectangular surfaces.

Given the skyscraper’s position removed from other buildings of similar height, residents of the upper floors will have panoramic 360-degree views of New York City from Midtown to Lower Manhattan, Downtown Brooklyn, Long Island City, and the rising waterfront skyline along Hunters Point South and Greenpoint.

No completion date or amenity list has been revealed for 3 Sutton Place, but YIMBY estimates completion by sometime in the middle of 2022.

No completion date, or amenity list has been revealed. The prominent structure with the crown, gold or bronze appears to take on; beautiful: Thanks to Michael Young.

Are those cell phone antennas at the top? The south facade looks more interesting with the gap down the center.

    • the comments get more and more insipid: the stripe is the unfinished part of the building yet to be filled in as construction is completed, and the stuff at the top is also construction scaffolding. The building is monolithic and bland for this day and age with a small amount of confection.

  3. It’s better than 432 Park Avenue, but that’s not saying much.

    • it’s “better” because?

      • It’s more appealing to look at.

        • 432 has pure geometries, window depth, better quality materials and no sentimental cap – I personally like a good top on a building, as it becomes a urban set piece or finishing detail but 3 Sutton seems only like a cheesy after-thought. Vinoly’s building is superior architecturally and as much as I don’t care much for it or 3 Sutton, they both don’t offer romance of design or a nod to integration into their surroundings, as Christopher pointed out!

  4. Notice how seamlessly it fits into the neighborhood? 🤣😂🤣

  5. I’ve warmed up to it, but it’s still not that impressive. It’s just a slightly more elegant version of 432 Park, which isn’t saying too much. Especially with its prominent location and height, I find this design very disappointing.

  6. Did it require a tuned mass damper at its summit?

  7. Better than most of this type, incl. 432

  8. Have no fear the wealthy will buy these apartments but leave them empty. Lol so many luxury buildings sold with few tenants . If a camera was put outside these buildings it would be interesting to see how many walk in and out everyday in comparison to a normal 20 story building.
Architecturally it looks like a rectangle .
