460 Main Street’s Curtain Wall Reaching Upper Floors on Roosevelt Island

Rendering of Riverwalk 8 at 460 Main Street in Roosevelt Island

Installation of the glass and brick curtain wall of 460 Main Street, aka Riverwalk 8, is nearing completion on Roosevelt Island. The 21-story, 341-unit building is designed by Handel Architects and is being developed as a joint venture between Related Companies and Hudson Companies. This will be the eighth component in the nine-building Riverwalk rental complex.

Photos show the envelope approaching the top of the edifice, which easily blends with the surrounding buildings.

The modular pieces of each panel make the installation process much faster. The L-shaped floor plates will likely house a number of students, families, and staff members that work for Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in Manhattan, as is the case with the addresses across the street. Residents with east- and south-facing windows have views of Long Island City, the Queensboro Bridge, and the morning sun.

460 Main Street is located a couple minutes from the entrance to the F train at the Roosevelt Island subway station. Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park is less than 20 minutes to the south by foot. Access to the tram between the island and Manhattan is a five-minute walk to the south, while Cornell’s satellite campus is a ten-minute walk just beyond the Queensboro Bridge. The Motorgate Garage is found at the northern end of the island that connects vehicular traffic to Queens and is about a ten- to fifteen-minute walk from the property. A number of large parks, long walkways along the waterfront, and green space provide recreation for families and visitors.

460 Main Street is slated to be finished next winter.
