Permits have been filed for a 20-story mixed-use building at 192 Montague Street in Brooklyn Heights, Brooklyn. Located between Clinton Street and Borough Hall in the Borough Hall Skyscraper Historic District, the development went before the Landmark Preservation Commission last month, as reported by YIMBY. Both Brooklyn Borough Hall and Columbus Park Plaza are just steps away, and the 2, 3, 4, 5, and R subway trains are all within a few blocks’ radius. The Cayre Group is listed as the owner behind the applications.

The proposed 215-foot-tall development will yield 140,725 square feet, with 93,686 square feet designated for residential space and 6,514 square feet for commercial use. The building will have 121 residences, most likely rentals based on the average unit scope of 774 square feet. The concrete-based structure will also have retail on the sub-street level, a cellar, and a 30-foot-long rear yard.

Beyer Blinder Belle is listed as the architect of record.

Demolition permits were filed in January 2019. An estimated completion date has not been announced.

  1. I thought Montague Street along with the rest of Brooklyn Heights was part of the Historical Preservation area. I guess not. When I first moved to the Heights in 1965 Montague Street was so charming…Old fashioned book stores, delis, Art galleries and framing stores…All gone. Now it has no charm whatsoever…
I moved down to Cobble Hill and Then on to Carroll Gardens..hoping to keep from getting drowned in the tsunami of “progress.” At 75, I may just make it before it overtakes me.

    • I too remember the heights of the 60s and 70s. Lots of mom and pop stores, even a local hardware store, cleaners, used bookstore, etc. all on Montague. I even took ballet lessons above a ladies clothing store on the same street.

    • Lots of interesting stores still there, although the book stores have gone. Framing stores, Lassen & Hennig deli, still there. And the Cate Café has moved over from Atlantic Avenue.

There is the Brooklyn Heights Historic Area, and the Skyscraper District, but there is a space between them, on Montague between Clinton and Court, that is not protected. That’s where all the new highrises are going in.
