New Apartment Building Set to Rise at 170 Amsterdam Avenue

Permits filed with New York’s Department of Buildings show that a twenty story residential tower is about to begin rising at 170 Amsterdam Avenue, on the Upper West Side. The property was bought by Sam Zell, who heads Equity Residential.

No renderings have been released yet, but the new tower will contain 235 units. The entire building will be just shy of 200,000 square feet in total, with a small commercial component at the base. Twenty stories is nothing special for New York, but Amsterdam is relatively desolate south of 72nd Street, so new development is definitely welcome.

The tower will rise on Amsterdam Avenue in between 67th and 68th Streets, giving Fordham’s redevelopment some welcome nearby company.

  1. i live across the street in tower 67 and have been anxiously trying to figure out how tall the new tower might be. your 20-story estimate is music to my ears… just curious how sure you are of this… rather than it being 40-50 floors with much larger, more spacious units?

  2. The permits filed with the DOB should be fairly final, so I would think the chances of the height changing are quite low.
