A proposal has been submitted to the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) for upgrades to the public restroom building in Stuyvesant Square East, located along East 15th Street between Second Avenue and Nathan D. Perlman Place in Manhattan. The project, led by NYC Parks’ Capital Projects Division with WXY as the design team, involves the renovation of a 600-square-foot structure within the 3.93-acre park. The $4.115 million plan focuses on accessibility improvements, building system upgrades, and restoration work within the historic district.

The scope of work includes modifications to bring the restroom facility into compliance with ADA standards, addressing existing barriers such as non-compliant steps and uneven pathways caused by tree root heaving. As shown in the site analysis diagrams on pages 8 and 10, existing conditions include deteriorated pavement, limited pedestrian circulation due to fencing, and a lack of adequate lighting at the restroom entrance. The proposal introduces a reconfigured landscape with an ADA-compliant sloped walkway and platform designed to improve access while minimizing impacts on the surrounding tree canopy.

Additional upgrades include structural and non-structural repairs to the building envelope, including masonry restoration, roof replacement, and window upgrades to match historic aesthetics, as detailed in the elevation drawings. The project also calls for the electrification of building systems, replacing the existing gas service and boiler with electric systems. Site improvements extend to the adjacent dog run, where new benches, stabilized pavement, and reconfigured fencing will improve usability while slightly reducing the overall footprint of the run, as indicated in comparison diagrams.

Transit nearby Stuyvesant Squar eEast includes the 14th Street–Union Square station, which provides connections to the 4, 5, 6, L, N, Q, R, and W trains, as well as the 1st Avenue station on the L train.
