Klein Enterprises has revealed the first images of 212 Durham Avenue, a 272-unit rental development in Metuchen, New Jersey. Designed by JDAVIS Architects, the façade features a mix of pale gray and tan cladding, dark gray brick, and a metal canopy above the main residential entrance.

Construction is now underway and the developer expects to open the building in fall 2025.

“The borough of Metuchen has been discussing possibilities for this site for decades and now the transformation has begun,” said Metuchen Mayor Jonathan M. Busch. “This is an example of a public-private partnership that will be a true benefit to our community.”

The mix of units will range from studios to three-bedroom floor plans. This includes around 40 units or 15 percent of the total apartment stock. On the ground level, there will be six one-bedroom apartments with a private on-site office and a dedicated entrance.

Demolition of the vacant, failing structures at 212 Durham Street was completed in April, and including clearing access to a 32-acre parcel near Dismal Swamp Preserve. Middlesex County officials plan to redevelop the area into a sprawling park with boardwalk trails, bike lanes, a bird-watching tower, and public parking. The goal is to invigorate the area with publicly accessible outdoor space for people of all ages and abilities.

As part of its agreement with the county, Klein Enterprises will remediate the former industrial property to remove any potential ground contamination at the site. Total costs for the remediation have already exceeded $10 million.

“Over the past few years, we’ve worked closely with both Mayor Jonathan M. Busch’s team as well as Middlesex County officials to establish a redevelopment plan that meets two primary objectives,” said Daniel Klein, president of Klein Enterprises. “The first was to preserve a portion of the property as the gateway to a new county nature preserve and the second was to redevelop the balance of the property with a state-of-the-art residential building that fits the character of the community and incorporates green building elements. Collectively, we believe that we have not only met but exceeded these objectives.”
