Howard Hughes Corporation could soon begin construction on a new waterfront restaurant and bar in the South Street Seaport District pending approval by the Landmarks Preservation Commission. Known as Blockhouse Bar, the property is located along the East River Esplanade at 84 John Street, immediately beneath FDR Drive.

The design employs a mix of natural and industrial-looking materials in order to blend in with the context of the surrounding urban waterfront’s red brick architecture and wooden piers. Renderings from Woods Bagot, the architect of record, reveal a minimalist design constructed from a mix of composite wood materials, dark metal light fixtures, steel railings, concrete planters, and illuminated signage. A transparent shell system would be deployed during the cooler months.

The building materials were also chosen to help reduce existing sightlines from John Street and the esplanade of the East River waterfront.

When in operation, the bar’s capacity will max out at 100 patrons. Menu items will include a mix of beer and cocktails, pizza, and a raw bar. The estimated cost of construction is approximately $650,000.

These planning must be done, I believe in the efforts of developers: Hello New York YIMBY.

  2. That part of the city will never reach its potential with the FDR looming over it. The best plan is to build on top of the FDR. This was done long ago for Sutton place and Carl Schurz Park. Cars have been king for too long in this city. It’s a good thing a river highway wasn’t built in Queens or Brooklyn.

  3. Too bad they couldn’t get Blacktail’s terrace here

  4. These renderings, especially on a phone screen, look more like photographs.

  5. the outside bar look wonderful!

  6. Prediction it ends up costing twice as much.

Landmark always has to many meetings and argues
    Over light bulb size .

Look at all the empty stores throughout the city.
