Families of East Elmhurst, Queens can rejoice, as a new public school will soon be coming to their neighborhood. Permits have been filed for a five-story building at 111-12 Astoria Boulevard, and the NYC School Construction Authority will be responsible for both design and development.

The 72-foot tall structure will yield nearly 100,000 square feet of space. The building will contain a cafeteria and kitchen, classrooms, offices, a gymnasium, auditorium, and library. The project should be a welcome addition to the neighborhood, which is home to many modest-income families.

The school will be a 15-minute walk to the Citi Field stadium, which borders the Flushing Meadows Corona Park.  It will also be close to the New York Hall of Science, Queens Museum, and the Queens Zoo, all exciting destinations for future field-trips.

Demolition permits were filed in early September, and a completion date has not been announced.
