Late last month, we reported that work was halted at the southern building at the Pier 1 site at Brooklyn Bridge Park, over concerns that the project’s 55-foot height infringed on the Brooklyn Heights Scenic View District.
Now, we’ve gotten word from the developers that the stop work order has been lifted after some slight modifications to the plan.
“The alterations to the building include taking away two parapet walls on the roof,” wrote a spokesperson, “and lowering the building by 1.5 feet.”
“We take our responsibilities to safeguard the scenic view district very seriously,” said Brooklyn Bridge Park President Regina Myer in a statement sent to YIMBY. “The changes made here will ensure the promenade’s view plane will be protected by reducing rooftop elements and adjusting the building’s height. We look forward to the completion of the project, which will provide critical funding to keep the park safe and well maintained for millions of visitors for years to come.”
The building was designed by Marvel Architects, and is being developed by a joint venture between Starwood Capital and Toll Brothers City Living.
The project attracted controversy for what opponents saw as commercial development in a public space – never mind that the public space would never have existed without the private development to pay for it, as the city quite rightly was not willing to devote citywide general funds to a park in a wealthy neighborhood that already had an abundance of public space on its edges.
Work on the project – which will eventually bring 100 desperately needed market-rate apartments to an in-demand neighborhood that has been landmarked into oblivion – can now resume.
