Extell’s One Hudson Yards has a new website, complete with a fresh set of renderings. Designed by Kohn Pederson Fox, the 1.75 million square foot office tower will eventually rise 877 feet.
Originally conceived as the World Product Center, the new design is slightly shorter but more visually appealing.
KPF will leave a major mark on the redevelopment of Midtown West, as they happen to be the architects for Related’s mega-office towers that are also under construction. Though One Hudson Yards and the Coach Tower are a similar height, One Hudson Yards is much bulkier as it rises—despite the shared architect, the two towers are very distinct.
One Hudson Yards upends the traditional glass box, and it looks as though someone took an X-Acto knife to the tower’s roof. The ‘diagrid’—which bears some semblance to Nouvel’s Torre Verre—gives the tower personality, while simultaneously adding a dimension of depth to the facade.
The base of One Hudson Yards is marked by what almost amounts to a skirt, as the tower’s curtain wall is punctuated by a glass and metal canopy. Though maintaining a pedestrian scale among the enormous new towers of Midtown West will be difficult, the ‘skirt’ manages to accomplish this, opening the facade into a dynamic and inviting lobby entrance.
The tower’s foundations are largely finished as it rests atop the 7-Line extension, though no date for completion has been announced. Regardless, Extell’s tower seems likely to be one of the first to rise in what will soon be New York’s tallest neighborhood.
