Construction Update: High Line Residential Boom

Several construction sites along the northern end of the High Line are now progressing, with Related’s new tower at 500 West 30th Street leading the pack. The Stern-designed residential tower is already ten stories in height, and it will eventually rise twenty more. 500 West 30th will be the first of Related’s High Line-area projects to come to completion, as excavation is still in its infancy across the street at The Hudson Yards.

Further down the High Line are two adjacent projects, the Avalon West Chelsea and the Gateway to Hudson Yards. Also residential, the Avalon West Chelsea will take up much of the western portion of the block and rise 30-odd floors. The Gateway to Hudson Yards will straddle the High Line with a 23-story residential tower and a 13-story boutique hotel.

Demolition for the Gateway has recently been completed and excavation is now underway, while the Avalon West Chelsea is at its first floor–it has taken quite some time to move past ground level, perhaps because of the site’s location in the flood zone of Hurricane Sandy. Even with the threat of inundation lurking, the area will continue to boom as the land becomes increasingly desirable due to proximity to the High Line and the Hudson Yards.
