Construction has begun on 570 Eldert Lane, a seven-story affordable housing development in Cypress Hills, Brooklyn. Designed by Think! Architecture + Design and developed by Slate Property Group and Thorobird Companies in partnership with Bangladeshi American Community Development & Youth Services (BACDYS) and Goldman Sachs, the structure will deliver 213 affordable residential units alongside community-focused programming. The city-owned through-block property is located between Glenmore and Pitkin Avenues.

The 196,000-square-foot building will also include nearly 10,000 square feet of community space to be operated by BACDYS, as well as supportive services provided by Urban Pathways. Sixty-six units have been reserved for formerly homeless residents and the remainder target households earning between 40 and 80 percent of area median income (AMI). Apartment layouts will range from studios to four-bedroom units.

Renderings show the design composed of multiple volumes with angular intersections. The ground floor will utilize an open layout with central columns, and will feature an open-air corridor leading to a rear courtyard. The façade will be composed of gray paneling surrounding floor-to-ceiling windows, including an irregular pattern of protruding beveled frames. Wood paneling will be used extensively across the ground floor and fenestration.

Additional amenities will include a fitness room and landscaped rooftop. The project is designed to meet Enterprise Green Communities standards, incorporating solar power with battery storage, high-efficiency building systems, and prefabricated façade components. Sustainability measures also include green roofs, permeable paving, and water- and energy-efficient fixtures throughout the building.

The closest subway from the site is the A train at the Grant Avenue station.

Wood paneling? London already experienced the result of flammable exteriors on multistory buildings.

    • You thinking of Grenfell? That was due to the combination of aluminum cladding and a gap between the cladding and insulation that acted like a chimney. Not because of wood.

An excellent project with a very solid design.

  3. David there are recent buildings with wood paneling in Bushwick, Williamsburg and Greenpoint. They are fine in the U.S.
