Bedpan Alley is about to get a fancy new medical lab.

In 2011, the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center picked up an old two-story Hertz garage at 327 East 64th Street for $19 million, between First and Second Avenues. They demolished the original structure and a new building permit application was filed last summer to erect a six-story, 74-foot-tall medical building in its place, for which YIMBY now has a rendering.

Designed by Perkins+Will, the total construction area will reach nearly 90,000 square feet, though only 49,000 square feet will count towards zoning, given that three of the building’s nine total stories will be submerged below grade. Aboveground, the first four floors will be occupied by laboratories and related uses, while the fifth and sixth floors will hold conference rooms, office space, and a north and south terrace at the top.

Memorial Sloan Kettering goes into greater detail about the project on their website:

The new Laboratory Medicine Building will maximize operational efficiency, allowing the Laboratory Medicine team to provide test results faster and reduce

the amount of blood needed from a patient to generate those results.

Laboratory services performed at the facility will include specialized testing in hematology/hemostasis, clinical chemistry, microbiology/ infectious disease, and flow cytometry (a technique used to examine microscopic particles such as cells and chromosomes). A full-service blood bank and stem cell therapy laboratory will be used to prepare blood and cell products for transfusion at the point of care. In addition, the new facility will support a training program for the next generation of laboratory medicine professionals.

The architects will aim for LEED Gold certification, and expect the structure to open for occupancy in mid-2017. Hunter Roberts Construction Group will be heading construction.

Meanwhile, Memorial Sloan Kettering is planning a 1.2 million-square-foot, 450-foot-tall project farther up town, to be built on the FDR Drive between East 73rd and 74th Streets.
