French design house Hermès has signed a 71,757-square-foot lease at 550 Madison Avenue, Philip Johnson’s landmarked commercial tower in Midtown East, Manhattan. The sprawling new office will span three full levels across the 23rd through 25th floors.

The new space will serve as the brand’s United States headquarters. Its former outpost is located at 55 East 59th Street.

The Olayan Group, current owners of the building, recently completed a dramatic renovation and modernization of the building. Under the direction on Gensler and Snøhetta, this included an elegant new lobby, large scale art installations, the construction of a new landscaped outdoor terrace that is open to the public, and more.

  1. That blue ball in the lobby is breathtaking—reminds me of Neptune! “Solid Sky”—24-tons!

I thought mass dampers were supposed to be at the tops of buildings. In Japan, one place has a gilt sphere of metal that is a tourist attraction. I suppose this is more of a sword of Damocles and wonder how many avoid walking under it. The stone is pretty.
