The issue of shadows over Midtown had seemingly been settled over a century ago, with the construction of the neighborhood’s first skyscrapers, but many of the new trees in New York’s urban forest will stand a substantial height taller than the existing plateau. While critics have lurked in the background since the death of the original Torre Verre, they are once again out in full force, seeking new limitations on development due to “the shadows.”
Last year, architect Charles Mallea filed plans for three neighboring buildings with 24 units on Starr Street, between Wilson and Central Avenues in Bushwick. Now YIMBY has renderings for the development, which will rise four stories, spanning the lots of 24-28 Starr Street.
At the eastern edge of Alphabet City, an old single-story deli is yielding to a 7-story residential building, for which YIMBY has obtained renderings. The project is located at 127 Avenue, between 8th and 9th Street, and its architect of record is JCT Engineering. Permits list the applicant as Sharon Hakmon of 127D Realty LLC.
While part of the Broadway Triangle is still tied up in a hotly contested debate over rezoning and racial politics, developers are quickly moving to build on the remaining lots in the former industrial ‘hood at Williamsburg’s southern edge, like 221 Middleton Street, where plans were just filed to construct a six-story apartment building.
