Tower Crane Comes Down From One Manhattan Square As Exterior Work Nears Completion

Construction on the Lower East Side’s first legitimate skyscraper continues apace. When YIMBY last looked at 252 South Street, i.e. One Manhattan Square, the superstructure had reached its 80^th floor, with topping-out officially occurring last September. Now, only a dozen floors of cladding remain before its exterior is complete. Extell Development is responsible for development, with Lendlease responsible for construction.

Façade Installation Nearly Complete for 196 Orchard Street, Lower East Side, Manhattan

Construction at 196 Orchard Street on the Lower East Side of Manhattan has reached a new milestone, with the installation of the building’s glazed-brick façade nearing completion. The 11-story residential building stands above Houston Street, beside Katz Delicatessen. It reaches a height of 120 feet, thanks to the purchase of air rights from the deli.

Permits have been filed for two three-story townhouse buildings at 85 and 87 Calyer Street, in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. The site is seven blocks away from the Greenpoint subway station, serviced by the G trains. Nine blocks away is the Greenpoint ferry terminal, with service to Long Island City, Midtown, Downtown Brooklyn, and Downtown Manhattan. Poise Real Estate Group is responsible for the development.

Demolition Begins For Final Piece of Extell’s 775-Foot-Tall 50 West 66th Street on the Upper West Side

One of the more interesting new designs coming to Manhattan will be at 50 West 66^th Street, where Extell will soon be adding yet another punctuation mark to the city’s skyline. The site is just six blocks away from Columbus Circle, and down the block from Central Park. The building was last on our radar in late 2017, with the news that the project would dramatically increase in size to become the tallest tower on the Upper West Side, taking away the title from 200 Amsterdam Avenue before it could even begin rising. Now, demolition has officially begun on the assemblage’s last structural occupant, while excavation continues apace across the land that has already been cleared.

Momentous Redevelopment of the South Bronx’s Spofford Juvenile Detention Center Approved

Following a crucial vote by The New York City Council Committee on Land Use, a massive redevelopment proposal for the long-vacant Spofford Juvenile Detention Center in the the South Bronx will officially move forward. The project is expected to have transformative effects on the surrounding Hunts Point neighborhood, and is the latest component of the city’s multi-billion dollar initiative to rejuvenate the South Bronx.
