For more than 40 years, the Empire State Building‘s observatory reigned as the loftiest manmade place on Earth. Though no longer the pinnacle of New York, the Art Deco masterpiece’s Olympian mass still cuts an uncontested figure in the popular imagination as a symbol of the city and is an enduring emblem of human might and ingenuity. Today, as the supertall enters its tenth decade, it welcomes visitors with a fresh new face, the product of a four-year, $165 million renovation to improve the experience for the 10,000-odd guests that stream through its doors each day.

Avison Young Reveals Conceptual Renderings of 176-178 Delancey Street on Manhattan’s Lower East Side

Avison Young’s investment sales team has revealed new renderings of a 50,000-square-foot building on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The property’s address is listed as 176-178 Delancey Street, where two vacant low-rise structures are currently located.

Permits Filed for 2455 Third Avenue in Mott Haven, The Bronx

Two sets of permits were filed this past week for 2455 Third Avenue in Mott Haven, The Bronx. One is for a 24-story mixed-use building and the other for a 23-story residential building. Located between East 134th Street and East 135th Street, the lot is near the 3 Avenue-138 Street subway station, serviced by the 6 train. Artimus NYC is listed as the owner behind the applications.

Permits Filed for 540 Waverly Avenue in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn

Permits have been filed for a nine-story mixed-use building at 540 Waverly Avenue in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. Located at the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and Waverly Avenue, the corner lot is near the Clinton-Washington Avenue subway station, serviced by the C train. The Daten Group is listed as the owner behind the applications.

Central Park Tower’s Glass Curtain Wall Nears Completion in Midtown

Taking the number-one spot in our annual construction countdown is the 1,550-foot-tall Central Park Tower, aka 217 West 57th Street, the tallest building by roof level in New York City and the entire western hemisphere, as well as the tallest residential building in the world. Work on the glass curtain wall is approaching the parapet of the slender reinforced concrete superstructure, which rises 99 stories above 57th Street, aka Billionaires’ Row. The project is designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill and developed by Extell, which is expecting a $4 billion sellout on the tower’s 179 residences. A 320,000-square-foot Nordstrom flagship occupies the base of the building.

533 Mercer Street, aka 289 Jordan, Approaches Halfway Point in Jersey City

Construction is nearing the halfway mark at 533 Mercer Street, aka 289 Jordan, in Jersey City. The superstructure has been steadily rising and will eventually top out as one of the tallest buildings to the west of the main downtown district. The 16-story structure is designed by Marchetto Higgins Stieve Architects and developed by Mercer Jordan LLC, an affiliate of New York-based company Sequoia Development Group, GRID Real Estate, and Dresdner Robin. The mixed-use project is expected to contain 300 apartments.

Promont NYC Reveals 150 Lenox Road in Flatbush, Brooklyn

Developer Promont NYC has gained approvals to construct a new eight-story apartment building near Prospect Park in Flatbush, Brooklyn. The structure will rise from an interior lot at 150 Lenox Road and will eventually contain 42 apartments and a small ground-floor community facility. At 688 square feet apiece, the homes will most likely be rentals.

Located between Flatbush Avenue and Bedford Avenue, the lot is two blocks from the Parkside Avenue subway station, serviced by the Q train and two blocks from the Winthrop Street station, serviced by the 2 and 5 trains. Steven Goltche under the 87 Winthrop BH LLC is listed as the owner behind the applications.

111 West 57th Street’s Terracotta Envelope Reaches Steel Crown in Midtown

The terracotta and bronze façade has reached the bottom of the steel crown of SHoP Architects‘ 111 West 57th Street, the second-tallest project in YIMBY’s construction countdown. Developed by JDS Development, Property Markets Group, and Spruce Capital Partners, the 1,428-foot-tall residential skyscraper features a height-to-width ratio of 24:1, making it the most slender building in the world. A total of 46 condominiums will be created and marketed by Douglas Elliman. Studio Sofield is the interior designer.

Façade Work Underway on Hillrose 28 at 157-161 East 28th Street in Kips Bay

Exterior work is underway at 157-161 East 28th Street, aka Hillrose 28, a topped-out 20-story building in the Midtown neighborhood of Kips Bay. Located at the northern corner of East 28th Street and Third Avenue, the residential project stands 191 feet tall and contains 66,125 square feet of space spread across 43 units. C3D Architecture is the project designer, Lemay + Escobar is the interior designer, and Forkosh Development is the developer of the property. Corcoran Sunshine is in charge of marketing and selling the residences.
