The colorful Radio Tower & Hotel, a new 23-story mixed-use tower in Washington Heights, is now open to guests. Located at 2420 Amsterdam Avenue, the project was completed by developer Youngwoo & Associates with architects MVRDV and Stonehill Taylor.
New York City’s largest rooftop park opened to the public last week atop Pier 57 in Chelsea. Designed by Handel Architects and developed by RXR Realty, YoungWoo & Associates, Hudson River Park Trust, and The Baupost Group, the 2-acre space is part of a $410 million renovation to the 70-year-old structure in Hudson River Park and now features 350,000 square feet of office space with Google as the anchor tenant. The building will also feature 50,000 square feet of public-oriented amenities on the ground floor developed by Jamestown that include a food hall curated by the James Beard Foundation, community space with flexible layouts available for booking by local organizations, a public gathering place called the Living Room, and an outdoor screening space for the annual Tribeca Film Festival. Pier 57 formerly served as a shipping port and bus depot and is located at the intersection of West Street and West 15th Street.
Construction has topped out on the Radio Tower & Hotel, a 22-story building at 2420 Amsterdam Avenue in Washington Heights. Designed by MVRDV with executive architect Stonehill & Taylor and developed by Youngwoo & Associates, the building features a ceramic brick façade that breaks away into eight boxy volumes, each with its own distinct color. From top to bottom this includes a vibrant lime green and yellow that transition into subdued blue, red, orange, teal, and magenta materials. Overall, the building’s design draws inspiration from the diversity and vibrancy of the existing neighborhood and is described by MVRDV as a colorful welcome sign to upper Manhattan.
Washington Heights will soon be home to a grand-scale realization of a Lego-block-styled tower offering class-A office space, retail, and hotel components. “Radio Tower & Hotel,” located at 2420 Amsterdam Ave, has officially broken ground, and represents the first significant mixed-use development in Washington Heights in almost 50 years.
The monolithic former Verizon building at 375 Pearl Street is finally getting an upgrade. The 32-story telephone switching building is still outfitted with tiny, three-foot-wide windows, but big pieces of the upper floors have been removed and replaced with glass.
