An estimated 800,000 working-class New Yorkers would benefit from subsidized, half-price MetroCards. The City Council hammered transit officials today on how the city and the MTA should be doing more to make discounted subway and commuter rail fares a reality for low-income people across the five boroughs.
In October of 2015, the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey (PANYNJ) approved a multi-billion-dollar redevelopment plan to build a new Port Authority Bus Terminal, located on the site of the existing one between West 40th and 42nd streets along Eighth Avenue. The polluted waterfront blocks in eastern Queens known as Flushing West are an industrial wasteland: vacant lots, warehouses, a scrap metal business, a lumber yard, a U-Haul rental. But the city hosted a meeting Wednesday night laying out its plan to rezone the 10-block swath along Flushing Creek and revitalize the area with new residential development.
The Citizens Budget Commission released a report earlier this week that predicted the MTA wouldn’t be able to fully repair all 467 of its subway stations until 2067, with suggestions on how the transit authority could finance repairs faster. The group suggested raising money through public-private partnerships, which can be incredibly effective. But when they’re negotiated poorly, these partnerships can cost cities and states millions.
