Green Roof Construction Progresses at 341 Ninth Avenue in West Chelsea, Manhattan

Construction is progressing on Manhattan’s largest outdoor roof deck atop the ten-story 341 Ninth Avenue in West Chelsea. Tishman Speyer and the United States Post Office are working together to redevelop the 2.2-million-square-foot building, known as the Morgan North Postal Facility, which was originally completed in 1933 and occupies a full block from Ninth to Tenth Avenues and West 29th to West 30th Streets. Upon completion, the structure will not only boast a 2.5-acre landscaped rooftop, but also more than 5,000 square feet of ground-floor retail along Ninth Avenue and newly renovated and modernized office floors. CBRE represented USPS in prior negotiations with Tishman Speyer for the project. King Contracting Group is handling the removal and replacement of the main roof on the seventh floor, totaling 150,000 square feet.

Designed by Bjarke Ingels Group and developed by Tishman Speyer, the 1,041-foot-tall structure will yield 2.85 million square feet of office space and is expected to cost nearly $3.7 billion. Turner Construction Company is managing construction, Banker Steel provided the steel work, and Permasteelisa served as the contractor for the reflective floor-to-ceiling glass enclosure for the property, which occupies a full city block between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues and 34th and 35th Streets.

Designed by Bjarke Ingels Group and developed by Tishman Speyer, the property occupies a full block between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues and 34th and 35th Streets, and is poised to provide a massive 2.85 million square feet of office space to Midtown, Manhattan. Turner Construction Company is serving as the construction manager, Banker Steel is in charge of manufacturing the steel, and Permasteelisa is the contractor for the reflective enclosure. The Spiral is expected to cost around $3.7 billion.
