Modernization work is shaping up on PENN 2, a 31-story commercial building at Two Penn Plaza in Midtown, Manhattan. Designed by MdeAS Architects and developed by Vornado Realty Trust, the project involves the replacement of the 412-foot-tall tower’s aging midcentury façade with a lighter glass curtain wall and the full gut renovation of its 1.61 million square feet of office space, as well as the construction of new pocketed corner terraces and a multistory cantilevering volume along Seventh Avenue. GMSLLP is the façade consultant and Turner Construction Company and Skanska are the contractors for the property, which is located between West 31st and West 33rd Streets within the Penn District revitalization master plan.

East Side Access Project’s Grand Central Madison Station Opens in Midtown East, Manhattan

A infrastructure project more than a half century in the making has finally reached the finish line with last week’s official opening of the Grand Central Madison station, the centerpiece of the $11.1 billion East Side Access plan to bring Long Island Rail Road service to Grand Central Terminal in Midtown East. Multiple companies designed, engineered, and collaborated on the project and include AECOM and Jacobs as project managers; WSP as a managing partner of a three-firm joint venture that includes STV and Parsons; Tutor Perini Corporation; Dragados; Judlau Contracting; Skanska; Michels; Comstock; Halmar International; Schiavone; Piccone; Five Star; Yonkers Electric; Tully Environmental; and EJ Electric. The new terminal sits 150 feet below the existing Grand Central facility, along Vanderbilt Avenue between East 43rd and East 48th Streets. The first ceremonial train ran from the Jamaica station in Queens and arrived at the Grand Central Madison station on January 25 at 11:07 a.m.

Key project elements include the replacement of four bridges that connect Bruckner Expressway and Bruckner Boulevard over Amtrak and CSX rail lines, improved pedestrian access, and a new community park.

Designed by MdeAS Architects, the cantilevering addition is part of a full-scale overhaul project involving the curtain wall replacement and modernization of the mid-century structure’s 1.61 million square feet of office space. The 412-foot-tall building is located along Seventh Avenue between West 31st and West 33rd Streets, and is part of the massive Penn District revitalization plan that will add ten new towers to the area surrounding Penn Station and Madison Square Garden in the coming years.
