YIMBY Checks Up On The World Trade Center Site Upon The 20th Anniversary of 9/11, In Financial District

As New York City and the United States remembers and commemorates the 20th anniversary of 9/11, YIMBY once again takes a look at the sacred 16-acre World Trade Center site, which holds the two square footprints of the former Twin Towers that are part of the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. We focus on the active and ongoing construction of the Ronald O. Perelman Performing Arts Center, St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, and the current state of Two and Five World Trade Center. All of which are, or are around, the former trapezoidal superblock that held six of the original World Trade Center buildings bound by West, Vesey, Church, and Liberty Streets.

Disney Headquarters Rises Above Street Level at Four Hudson Square in Hudson Square, Manhattan

Construction is rising rapidly on Disney’s 1.2-million-square-foot headquarters at 137 Varick Street in Hudson Square. Alternately addressed as Four Hudson Square, the 22-story, 338-foot-tall structure is designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and is being developed by Silverstein Properties. The media giant purchased the parcel from Trinity Church Real Estate for $650 million and Skanska was responsible for the demolition of four structures that wrapped up last summer. Lendlease is in charge of constructing the new headquarters, which is bound by Varick Street to the east, Spring Street to the south, Hudson Street to the west, and Vandam Street to the north.

Titled Resurgence, the collection is curated by Clayton Calvert, a painter, sculptor, and installation artist. The exhibit features 28 established and emerging artists, including World Trade Center resident artists, with work that speaks to the resiliency and resurgence of New York City.

In an exciting reveal for the ongoing redevelopment and rebuilding of the World Trade Center, Kohn Pedersen Fox has unveiled the first set of renderings for its proposed 900-foot-tall design for Five World Trade Center, aka 130 Liberty Street. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey selected the winning bid at a board meeting on Thursday afternoon to allow Silverstein Properties, Brookfield Properties, Omni New York LLC, and Dabar Development Partners to lease the 1.56-million-square-foot mixed-use building under a 99-year ground lease.

Revamped Design For Foster + Partners’ Two World Trade Center Awaits Reveal, In Financial District

Number five on YIMBY’s end-of-year countdown is Two World Trade Center, aka 200 Greenwich Street, a 1,350-foot-tall office skyscraper and the last major component of the 16-acre World Trade Center complex. Earlier this year, it was announced that Norman Foster of Foster + Partners would return as the architect for project, which is being developed by Larry Silverstein, head of Silverstein Properties. However, the highly anticipated revamped design of Foster’s original 2006 proposal has yet to be revealed.

Alternately addressed as Four Hudson Square, the site will give rise to a 22-story, 320-foot-tall superstructure designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and developed in partnership with Silverstein Properties. Disney purchased the full-block parcel from Trinity Church Real Estate for $650 million, and Skanska completed demolition of the four structures on the site during the summer. Lendlease is in charge of constructing the new building.

Demolition is finished and excavation work is now in full swing for Disney’s new 1.2-million-square-foot headquarters at 137 Varick Street, aka Four Hudson Square. Since YIMBY’s last update in late February, the final remaining building at 304 Hudson Street has been cleared from the property, which Disney purchased from Trinity Church Real Estate for $650 million. Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and developed in partnership with Silverstein Properties, the upcoming 22-story building will eventually top out at 320 feet tall. Skanska oversaw the demolition process for the Hudson Square complex, which involved the razing of four structures.

Illustrative Renderings Released of Norman Foster’s Original Design for Two World Trade Center, in the Financial District

YIMBY and Instagram user Sinaevart has created a new set of renderings depicting how Foster + Partner’s original 2006 design for 200 Greenwich Street, aka Two World Trade Center, would look among the current skyline. The renderings come on the heels of the reports that Norman Foster is in the midst of revamping the design after developer Silverstein Properties returned to him to complete the final component of the World Trade Center complex. Work on the project has been stalled since the early 2010s.
