FIT’s New Academic Building Rises at 220 West 28th Street in Chelsea, Manhattan

Construction is rising on the Fashion Institute of Technology‘s New Academic Building, a ten-story structure at 220 West 28th Street in the Garment District of Chelsea. Designed by SHoP Architects, the 110,000-square-foot facility will yield new classrooms, administrative offices, review and exhibition spaces, and a student quad illuminated by skylights. EE Cruz & Company Inc. is the general contractor for the Midtown project, which is located between Seventh and Eighth Avenues, within walking distance of Penn StationMadison Square Garden, and Moynihan Train Hall. The New Academic Building is aiming for LEED Gold certification upon completion.

Brooklyn Tower’s Construction Crane Comes Down at 9 DeKalb Avenue in Downtown Brooklyn

The construction crane is almost fully disassembled from The Brooklyn Tower as façade installation is closing in on completion on the 1,066-foot residential supertall at 9 DeKalb Avenue in Downtown Brooklyn. Designed by SHoP Architects and developed by JDS Development, the 93-story tower currently stands as the tallest structure in the outer boroughs and is going to have 150 condominium units, 280 market-rate rentals, 120 affordable rental units, and 100,000-square-foot retail podium that would incorporate the landmarked Dime Savings Bank of Brooklyn. The first set of homes for purchase will start over 500 feet above street level. Douglas Elliman is serving as the exclusive marketing, sales, and leasing agent for the property, which is bound by Flatbush Avenue Extension to the northeast, Fleet Street to the northwest, and DeKalb Avenue to the south.

Closings have begun for the 46 condominium units within the main tower of 111 West 57th Street, a 1,428-foot residential supertall in Midtown. Designed by SHoP Architects and developed by JDS DevelopmentProperty Markets Group, and Spruce Capital Partners, the 84-story edifice stands as the world’s most slender building. Studio Sofield is the interior designer and The Corcoran Group is leading sales and marketing for the residences, which also include 14 homes within the restored Steinway Hall building in the podium. WSP is the structural engineer, RWDI consulted with the design of the 800-ton tuned mass damper, Jaros, Baum & Bolles is the MEP engineer, R&R Scaffolding Ltd. provided the building maintenance unit (BMU) sitting atop the crown, and BuroHappold Engineering is the façade consultant for the project, which is located between Sixth and Seventh Avenues on Billionaires’ Row.

Finishing Touches Underway on Tin Building in Seaport District, Manhattan

Finishing touches are underway on the Tin Building, a three-story commercial market building at 95 Marginal Street on Pier 17 in the South Street Seaport District. Designed by SHoP Architects and developed by Howard Hughes Corporation with Plaza Construction as construction manager, the 53,000-square-foot structure will house a new seafood-themed market by Jean-Georges Vongerichten. The steel-framed low-rise building is located to the east of South Street and the elevated FDR Drive, directly to the west of SHoP’s Pier 17 structure, which features multiple restaurants and bars and has hosted many events on its expansive outdoor rooftop since its completion several years ago.
