St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church Wraps Up Construction in Manhattan’s Financial District

Work on the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church is finally coming to a close on the verge of the 21st anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Designed by Santiago Calatrava and developed by The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the white marble-clad structure is prominently perched atop Liberty Park just south of the original World Trade Center complex in the Financial District, and is the long-awaited replacement for the former church of the same name that was destroyed by the collapse of the South Tower on 9/11.

Work on the white marble and glass façade of the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church is bringing the long-awaited project closer to completion in the Financial District. Designed by Santiago Calatrava and developed by The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the reinforced concrete structure sits atop the eastern end of Liberty Park by the intersection of Greenwich and Liberty Streets. The ground floor rests on the elevated park space, which itself serves as the roof for the southern entrance and exit of the vehicle security center for the World Trade Center complex.

Construction is getting close to completion on St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in the Financial District. Designed by Santiago Calatrava and developed by The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the reinforced concrete structure sits atop Liberty Park by the intersection of Greenwich and Liberty Streets. The ground floor of the religious facility is adjacent to the elevated park space and also rests on the roof of the vehicle security center for the subterranean ramps that run beneath the World Trade Center.

As New York City and the United States remembers and commemorates the 20th anniversary of 9/11, YIMBY once again takes a look at the sacred 16-acre World Trade Center site, which holds the two square footprints of the former Twin Towers that are part of the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. We focus on the active and ongoing construction of the Ronald O. Perelman Performing Arts Center, St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, and the current state of Two and Five World Trade Center. All of which are, or are around, the former trapezoidal superblock that held six of the original World Trade Center buildings bound by West, Vesey, Church, and Liberty Streets.

Designed by Santiago Calatrava and developed by The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the church is found near the intersection of Greenwich Street and Liberty Street and sits above the eastern half of the vehicle security center for the World Trade Center.

More Marble Installed on Santiago Calatrava’s St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in the Financial District

Work is progressing on the white marble walls and dome framework of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in the Financial District. Designed by Santiago Calatrava and developed by The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the structure stands by the intersection of Greenwich Street and Liberty Street on the elevated Liberty Park, and will serve as the new home for the long-established church that was formerly located to the west of the park’s footprint at 155 Cedar Street. Calatrava’s architectural concept for the church was inspired by Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia and Church of the Holy Savior of Chora. A painting of Jesus Christ will adorn the underside of the dome’s highest point.

Located by the intersection of Greenwich Street and Liberty Street on the elevated Liberty Park, the structure will serve as the new home for the long-established church that was formerly located to the west of the park’s footprint at 155 Cedar Street. Located by the intersection of Greenwich Street and Liberty Street in the elevated Liberty Park, the structure will replace the original church of the same name located at 155 Cedar Street, which was destroyed on 9/11. The symmetrical architectural design was inspired by Istanbuls’ Hagia Sophia and Church of the Holy Savior of Chora. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is developing the project, which is positioned across from the original 16-acre World Trade Center complex.
