Construction Resumes on The Ronald O. Perelman Performing Arts Center at the World Trade Center

Back in December, YIMBY reported that work had appeared to stall for The Perelman Performing Arts Center at the World Trade Center, in the Financial District. While things have appeared to remain in-stasis since then, news has now broken that Governor Cuomo has officially allowed construction of the new PAC. That means work should soon begin again on the site, and may partially explain the delays seen over the past few months.

Façade Installation Nears the Top of 1,079-Foot Supertall, 3 World Trade Center

It has been over five months since we last checked in on the progress of 3 World Trade Center. At the end of August, the glass was nearly halfway up the supertall tower. Since then, it has come much closer to the top.

We are living in a bit of a renaissance for New York City-area bridges. New spans are under construction for the Goethals, Kosciuszko, and Tappan Zee bridges, and the deck of the Bayonne Bridge is being raised. The world’s busiest bridge, the George Washington, is also having work done.

$10 Billion Redesign Unveiled for John F. Kennedy International Airport

Governor Andrew Cuomo has unveiled plans for a $10 billion redesign of John F. Kennedy International Airport, in Queens. Broadly, the goal of the project is to better interconnect the airport’s existing terminals and improve the flow of vehicles and people through reconstruction and expansion of roadways, Crain’s reported. There would also be a large parking garage at the center of the airport, possibly to be topped by green space. Mass-transit upgrades are also in store, including plans for a one-seat ride to Manhattan. The state’s Department of Transportation will head the construction pertaining to roadways and mass transit, while the airport is expected to be rebuilt under partnerships with airline companies and operators, including the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey.

Rendering Revealed: Six-Story, 505-Key TWA Hotel at JFK International Airport

Full renderings have been revealed of the six-story, 505-key TWA Hotel, a redevelopment of the vacant TWA Flight Center at John F. Kennedy International Airport, in Queens. A groundbreaking ceremony was also recently held for the project, Curbed NY reported. Beyer Blinder Belle is behind the design, which incorporates much of the existing airport terminal, designated an individual and interior landmark. MCR Development and JetBlue Airways Corporation, the developers, are leasing the terminal from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Since the terminal is owned by the Port Authority, approval from the Landmarks Preservation Commission is not required, although the project had to pass the city’s Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP). Completion is expected in 2018.

Five Finalists Revealed for New Port Authority Bus Terminal

In October of 2015, the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey (PANYNJ) approved a multi-billion-dollar redevelopment plan to build a new Port Authority Bus Terminal, located on the site of the existing one between West 40th and 42nd streets along Eighth Avenue. The design competition has since narrowed down to five finalists, Crain’s reported.

Glass Nears Halfway Mark at 3 World Trade Center, Financial District

The 15th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks is less than two weeks away, and there is new and noticeable progress that has been made on the construction of the World Trade Center.

World Trade Center’s Liberty Park Opens Today in the Financial District

The World Trade Center’s Liberty Park is now receiving its finishing touches for its grand opening today. The Financial District’s new, one-acre public park is 25 feet above street level and measures 336 feet along Liberty Street between West and Greenwich streets. It will feature 19 planters, a half-dozen species of plants, seating made out of recycled teak, and a 300-foot-long “Living Wall” of greenery along its northern base. Pictures of it ahead of its opening can be seen in a New York Times report. It will be open to all from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. each day. Aecom’s Joseph E. Brown is the landscape architect, and the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey is behind the project. The Santiago Calatrava-designed St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church can also be seen taking shape on the site’s eastern end. That portion of the project is expected to be complete in 2017. YIMBY last brought you an update on Liberty Park when construction was in its final phases in May.

3 World Trade Center Tops Out This Morning

The building of the new World Trade Center is about to take one big step closer to completion. 3 World Trade Center, the fourth office tower to be rebuilt following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, will be topped out later this morning.

Development Team Closes on Deal with Port Authority to Rebuild LaGuardia Airport

Back in March, the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey (PANYNJ) officially approved plans to rebuild LaGuardia Airport, in East Elmhurst, in addition to incorporating a 24-hour ferry service and an AirTrain to help transport travelers. Now, LaGuardia Gateway Partners – comprised of Vantage Airport Group, Skanska, and Meridiam – has closed on a deal with the Port Authority to actually construct the project, and to operate the new 1.3-million-square-foot airport through 2050, according to Crain’s. Demolition is expected to begin within the next few months on the five-story parking garage in front of the Central Terminal building. The Central Terminal will be the first portion to be redeveloped and is expected to be complete by 2021, followed by Terminals C and D. The development team, which is putting up $1.8 billion of its own money, has already secured $2.5 billion in financing. The Port Authority is responsible for an additional $2.2 billion that will go towards infrastructure work.
