Last week, YIMBY featured a terrible new hotel coming to 525 Eighth Avenue, off the northwest corner of 34th Street and Eighth Avenue. A few blocks to the north and west, on the southwest corner of Ninth Avenue and 42nd Street, another architectural atrocity is getting ready to open its doors, at 577 Ninth Avenue, and Tectonic has the latest photos of progress.
The number of parking lots remaining in Midtown West continues to dwindle, and now, applications have been filed for 350 West 45th Street, between Eighth and Ninth avenues, where yet another is about to bite the dust for a new development. Applications filed with the DOB show that the replacement seven-story structure will have a residential area measuring 20,600 square feet, which will be divided amongst 31 apartments, for an average size of a bit over 650 square feet each. That means rentals are exceedingly likely. Daniel Bernstein of Kutnicki Bernstein Architects is the architect of record, and David Schwartz, of 344 West 45th Street Corp., is listed as the developer.
Last week, the first full renderings appeared for the Alvaro Siza-designed 823 Eleventh Avenue, but that isn’t the biggest change underway on the block. Immediately to its northwest, TF Cornerstone’s new rental building at 606 West 57th Street is almost ready for its opening day, with construction nearly complete on the 1,028-unit project.
As the 57th Street boom’s western bookend at 606 West 57th Street nears completion, another new tower around the corner is getting ready to break ground. Demolition has yet to begin on the site’s existing occupant, but Curbed featured the first full rendering for the project, which is being designed by Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza. Dubbed 823 Eleventh Avenue, it will rise 35 floors and 440 feet to its rooftop, with 80 condominiums within. Sumaida+Khurana is the site’s developer, having acquired the existing building at 611 West 56th Street for $55 million last year, and completion is expected by 2019.
