City Seeking Developer for Mixed-Use Site at 11-24 Jackson Avenue, Long Island City

The New York City Economic Development Corporation and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority have launched a request for proposals (RFP) for the 58,000-square-foot development site at 11-24 Jackson Avenue, located in the Hunters Point section of Long Island City. The city is seeking a development team to deck over the site, which has railroad tracks passing underneath, and build a mixed-use project. Ideally, the project would have mixed-income residential units, ground-floor retail space, community facility space and open public space. The expectation is for the city to sell the site, DNAinfo reported.

Earlier this year, Gov. Andrew Cuomo released a request for proposals (RFP) to upgrade, modernize, and expand Pennsylvania Station, located at Eighth Avenue and West 33rd Street under Madison Square Garden. The project will also incorporate the landmarked James A. Farley Post Office Building into the transportation complex. Now, renderings of the project have been revealed, per The New York Times, along with a timeline.

220 Eleventh Avenue

Zaha Hadid-Designed Mixed-Use Project Planned At 220 Eleventh Avenue, West Chelsea

Back in 2002, the Moinian Group acquired, for an undisclosed amount, the 19,750-square-foot lot at 220 Eleventh Avenue, located between West 25th and 26th streets in West Chelsea. Since then, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has constructed what appears to be a ventilation system for the 7 Subway Extension on the northern end of the lot. Now, we can bring you news that the developer is moving forward with development of the site. Planned is a mixed-use project, with condominiums and a space for a cultural institution, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects. The project was one of the last that Zaha Hadid personally designed before she unexpectedly passed away earlier this year. The site can accommodate up to 187,820 square feet of new mixed-use development. Construction is expected to get underway in early 2017.

Port Authority Approves Plans To Rebuild LaGuardia Airport, East Elmhurst

In the summer of 2015, plans to build a new LaGuardia Airport were revealed along with other transportation infrastructure, including a 24-hour ferry service and an AirTrain, that would serve to link the East Elmhurst airport to the rest of the city. The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey (PANYNJ) has officially approved the project, which was recently estimated to cost upwards of $5.3 billion, Crain’s reported. As part of the deal to approve the project, the Port Authority agreed that it redevelop the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan, shooting down any chance that it would be rebuilt for much cheaper in New Jersey. As for the airport, the Central Terminal Building is phase one of the greater redevelopment and is expected to be finished by 2021. Terminals C and D will be built after that.

World Trade Center Transportation Hub

World Trade Center Transportation Hub Opens To The Public, Financial District

This past January, news broke that the $3.9 billion World Trade Center Transportation Hub in the Financial District would open to the public in early March. Last week, Curbed NY gave you a sneak peek inside the Santiago Calatrava-designed structure, and yesterday, on March 3rd, the hub officially opened. As seen in the photos, only a large chunk of the main concourse is open right now, and the rest of the structure is expected to follow in phases over the next few months. That includes 365,000 square feet of retail space to be managed by Westfield Corp. The Port Authority can now prepare to remove the temporary PATH station entrance near One World Trade Center, site of the planned World Trade Center Performing Arts Center, or PAC WTC. As reported earlier, the new transit hub now serves as the connection point for 11 subway lines, World Trade Center-bound PATH trains, multiple bus lines, and ferry service.
