Design Competition to Reclad 58-Story MetLife Building At 200 Park Avenue

Metals in Construction is launching a competition to reclad 200 Park Avenue, a.k.a the MetLife Building, which is situated directly behind Grand Central Terminal. Architects and engineers are being asked to submit plans for an updated, eco-friendly and efficient façade that would also retain the building’s heritage. 200 Park is a hulking 58-story, 3-million square-foot office building completed in 1963. Submissions are due February 1st, 2016, and $15,000 will be awarded to the team with the most innovative design.


Virgin Hotel, 1225 Broadway

Construction Begins on Virgin Hotel At 1225 Broadway, Midtown South

In August of 2014, YIMBY brought you the first glimpse of the 39-story, 465-key Virgin Hotel planned at 1225 Broadway, in Midtown South, and we revealed more renderings in January of this year. According to Commercial Observer, the developer has now broken ground on the 500,000 square-foot building, which will eventually contain 90,000 square feet of retail space. The hotel portion will measure 300,000 square feet, and 30,000 square feet will be designated as amenity space for guests. The Lam Group is the developer, while VOA Associates is the design architect, and completion is expected in 2018.


45 Park Place

Reveal For 43-Story, 667-Foot-Tall Condo Tower At 45 Park Place, Tribeca

In the first half of 2014, YIMBY reported on building applications for a nearly 600-foot-tall luxury residential tower at 45 Park Place, in Tribeca, and later that year, we revealed preliminary renderings of the project. Now, Bloomberg Business has the latest news on the tower, as well as an update on the design. The building will have 43 actual stories and will top out 667 feet above street level, up from the 39-story and 597-foot figures reported earlier. The latest filings call for 50 condominiums, and at least 15 will reportedly be full-floor units measuring 3,200 to 3,700 square feet. The 134,304 square-foot building will also incorporate 1,089 square feet of ground-floor retail.


155 West 23rd Street

Neglected 12-Story Office Building At 155 West 23rd Street Getting Renovation, Midtown South

The Kaufman Organization and Goldman Sachs have paid $45 million for a 99-year ground-lease on 155 West 23rd Street, in Midtown South, which is owned by Gary Barnett. Crain’s reports the existing 12-story, 82,000 square-foot office building will undergo a $10 million renovation immediately, which will include fixes to the roof, windows, and interior. Completion is expected by 2016, and ground-floor retail space will also be included.
